Past tense conjugation in Japanese is also called ta-kei (meana ta form) because the ending of past tense verbs are always ended by ta though there's a verb is ended by da. How to conjugate a verb into past tense in Japanese
1. To conjugate group 1 verbs (godan doushi) into past tense: for verbs with u, ru and tsu ending, replace u, ru, tsu ending with tta. Example:
買う ー 買ったfor verbs with nu, mu and bu ending, replace the ending to nda. Example:
kau - katta
buy - bought
分かる ー 分かった
wakaru - wakatta
understand - understood
待つ ー 待った
matsu - matta
wait - waited
死ぬ ー 死んだ
shinu - shinda
die - dead
飲む ー 飲んだ
nomu - nonda
drink - drank
飛ぶ ー 飛んだ
tobu - tonda
fly - flew
And for verbs with ku, gu and su ending, replace ku with ita, replace gu with ida, and replace su with shita. Example:
書く ー 書いた
kaku - kaita
write - wrote
泳ぐ ー 泳いだ
oyogu - oyoida
swim - swam
話す ー 話した
hanasu - hanashita
talk - talked
For 行く (iku) verb means "go" became 行った (itta) "went" in past tense, this is the only one an exception in this lesson, iku verb is a common and most frequently used, so you must being used to be with this exception, Ok?
2. To conjugate group 2 verbs (ichidan doushi) into past tense: to make past tense conjugation from this verb group is very simple, simpler than group 1 verb, just replace ru ending with ta. Example:
食べる ー 食べた
taberu - tabeta
eat - ate
見る ー 見た
miru - mita
see - saw
伝える ー 伝えた
tsutaeru - tsutaeta
tell - told
助ける ー 助けた
tasukeru - tasuketa
help - helped
借りる ー 借りた
kariru - karita
borrow - borrowed
出る ー 出た
deru - deta
go out - went out
出来る ー 出来た
dekiru - dekita
can - could
3. To conjugate group 3 verbs (fukisoku doushi) into past tense: as you knew, in this group, there are only two verbs, suru and kuru, so you must remember two forms only, suru become shita and kuru become kita in past tense.
する ー した
suru - shita
do - did
勉強する ー 勉強した
benkyou suru - benkyou shita
study - studied
来る ー 来た
kuru - kita
come - came
もう一年日本語を勉強したよ
mou ichinen nihongo o benkyou shita yo
